Buona Pasqua! / Happy Easter!
In questo blog (in this blog post) convido con te (I’ll share with you) qualche detto pasquale (a few Easter sayings) e delle foto di vetrine pasquali fatte in Italia qualche anno fa (and some photos of Easter-time shop windows taken in Italy a few years ago).
Detto N.1 / Saying #1
“Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi”.
📍Significato / Meaning:
In Italia le feste di Natale si passano rigorosamente con i parenti mentre a Pasqua, quando c’è bel tempo, è molto comune fare una gita o una vacanza anche con persone che non sono parenti.
📍Traduzione / Translation:
“Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever you want.”
In Italy, the Christmas holidays are strictly spent with relatives, while at Easter, when the weather is good, it is very common to take a trip or a holiday even with people who are not relatives.
Nota come il riflesso nella vetrina fa sembrare che gli anatroccoli viaggino in macchina! (Notice how the reflection in the shop window makes it look like ducklings are riding in the car!)
Detto N.2 / Saying #2
“Felice (o contento) come una Pasqua”
📍Significato / Meaning:
Questo si dice di qualcuno quando è molto felice, perchê la Pasqua, con il suo significato e tutti i colori vivaci delle uova e i fiori primaverili, è una festa allegra.
📍Traduzione / Translation:
“Happy (or contented) like an Easter” (Similar to “happy as a lark” or “pleased as punch”)
This is said about someone when they are very happy, because Easter, with its meaning and all the bright colors of the eggs and spring flowers, is a happy holiday.
Un anatroccolo riposa tra le galline, i pulcini, e i cestini di uova al cioccolato. (A duckling rests among the hens, the chicks, and the baskets of chocolate eggs.)
Detto N.3 / Saying #3
“Vuole far venire la Pasqua in maggio”
📍Significato / Meaning:
Questo si dice di chi vuole fare cose impossibili da realizzare.
📍Traduzione / Translation:
“He wants Easter to come in May”
This is said about someone who wants to do things that are impossible to achieve.
Un’elegante vetrina pasquale. (An elegant Easter shop window.)
Detto N.4 / Saying #4
“Lungo come la Quaresima”
📍Significato / Meaning:
Questo si dice di qualcosa, un evento e un discorso, che e`esageratamente lungo e sproporzionato.
📍Traduzione / Translation:
“Long as Lent”
This is said about something, an event and a speech, which is exaggeratedly long and disproportionate.
Un enorme coniglio al cioccolato, circondato da tanti amici, felice come una Pasqua! (A huge chocolate rabbit, surrounded by many friends, happy as an Easter!)

Thank you so much!!! You took me back to a much earlier time. I was raised in the Greek Orthodox religion and Easter Sunday was the big day. Too bad it wasn’t celebrated on the same day as our “American” friends/. We would say to one another Alithos Anesti and the person responding would say Alithos anesti (Translated God has risen – indeed he has.
