Class #3 Update–Carlsbad

Buona sera studenti!

Ecco il vostro aggiornamento settimanale della classe. (Hereā€™s your weekly class update.) Complimenti a tutti coloro che hanno fatto i compiti di classe! (Thumbs up to all those who did the oustide-of-class assignments!)

Read on for a class recap, homework/ new ways to use Italian in between classes, and important announcements.

What we studied/practiced:

  • We warmed up with a Mingle/Practice ofĀ  Italian Greetings, Small Talk Q+Aā€™s, & the Italian Alphabet and Pronunciation (including the questions: QualeĀ  e` il tuo cognome? and Come si scrive?)
  • Italian numbers and questions to practice them (QualeĀ  e` il tuo numero di telefono/indirizzo/numero preferito? and Quanto anni/figli hai?).
  • We began on phrases and vocabulary for shopping in Italy, including the translations for last weekā€™s homework words/phrases.
  • Italian Movie: Cinema Paradiso ā€” We studied, viewed, and practiced the bio and dialog of this classic Oscar-winning Italian film.

  • Outside-of-Class-Activities: (Aka Homework, except fun!!!)

    1. Translate these words/phrases into Italian. Use the online dictionaries located on the Links Page. We will use these during next class:

    Una Foto-Ottica

    Una cartoleria

    Una tabaccheria

    Una biglietteria

    Un supermarcato

    Una farmacia

    Una panetteria

CHALLENGE:Ā  Come up with some of your own items-to-buy or stores, and translate them!

    ** 3+ items/stores earns you a raffle ticket!!! **

    1. Watch Cinema Paradiso/Practice the dialog learned in class:Ā Ā  The easiest way may be to rent the film from an online source such as Netflix or Blockbuster, orĀ  purchase it online. Borrowing from local libraries and/or renting from local video shops is another possibility (though much slimmer). For a site where subtitles can be downloaded in English or Italian for this film (and many others) go to the Links page. You can also watch movies ONLINE from this site.

  • Announcements:

    • Wine ok in class ā€” Anyone wishing toĀ  bring and drink wine during class may do so ā€” per regulations of the Carlsbad Community and Rec Centers. (No corkage fee! šŸ˜‰ )
    • SD Italian Film Festival Going Hot & Heavy: Every day 10/31 ā€“ 11/7 (last day of fest) there will be a different Italian film. Curtain time: 7pm. Cost: $$Free, donations suggested. Where:Ā  Balboa Park. It is an excellent opportunity to enjoy Italian cinema in a beautiful venue! More details click here.

This includes the glass and a tasting/presentation of 8 different wines (Italian varietal grapes, of course!) Consider it and let me know next class.
    • CD Player Needed: During the Wednesday Escondido class, my CD player died an untimely death :(. If anyone has, or knows of someone who has, an unused CD player in need of adoption, please let me know. Grazie!
    • Hands-on Italian Cooking Tutorial. We have a kitchen! Giovanna has generously offered to hold the cooking class at her place. Grazie! Stay tuned for more info.

My Favorite Italian Grammar Book :-)

The Complete Italian Grammar is IMHO (in my humble opinion) the best Italian grammar book Iā€™ve come across. Part of the ā€˜Practice Makes Perfect Seriesā€™ from McGraw Hill publishers.

While I know not everyone is a grammar geek like me, sometimes students DO want some type of book to use as a reference for increasing their knowledge and understanding of Italian grammar. Complete Italian Grammar is a user-friendly text that I have used with students, that can also be used for self-study and reference. Set up in an ā€˜explanation + example + practical exercises to completeā€™ format, the book is easy to follow, pleasant to use, and includes verb charts and an answer key.

And at $12.95 itā€™s ā€˜un vero affareā€™ (a real bargain). Purchase it at major booksellers or online. Complete Italian Grammar by Marcel Danesi, McGraw Hill. ISBN # 978-0-07-160367-6. Click here for a link to Google search results for this book.

    Weekly Italian Idiom

    Salve!

Ecco la frase idiomatica della settimana = Hereā€™s your weekly Italian Idiom, brought to you by Italiano With Jodina:

    ā€œTutto fumo niente arrosto.ā€

Literally, this means ā€˜all smoke, no roastā€™, and would be used pretty much the same way in English we say ā€œall smoke and mirrorsā€.

Get Your Italy Fix! Visions of Italy DVD

Canā€™t make it to Italyā€™s ā€œBeautiful Countryā€ in person this year? Then sample the breathtaking sights from the vicarious comfort of a helicopter-mounted camera in this gorgeous aerial travelogue.

As seen on Public Television, Visions of Italy is the ultimate vacation postcard of Italy, including the sights and sounds immortalized for centuries in literature, movies, and art. Stunning aerial footage tours the cities and hill towns of Il Belpaese all the way from the Italian Alps to Sicily, in style and full color.

I have seen this video, set to Italian soundtrack, and several of my students have recommended it, saying itā€™s one of their favorite ways to ā€˜travelā€™ in the comfort of their own living room. Some even like to leave it running in the background!

Visions of Italy can be purchased in numerous places on the web (just Google it), and at many larger booksellers, such as Barnes and Noble. Prices I saw ranged from about $28-$40 new.
